Use of Internet-Enabled Devices During the School Day
Use of Internet-Enabled Devices During the School Day
In compliance with New York State Education Law, the Newark Central School District has adopted a new policy prohibiting the use of internet-enabled devices by students during the school day on school grounds. This includes devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets capable of accessing the internet or social media.
This policy is designed to support student focus and engagement by minimizing digital distractions during both instructional and non-instructional times, including lunch, study halls, recess, and passing periods.
Devices must be stored in designated on-site storage areas (such as, but not limited to, lockers, main office storage or lockable phone storage cases/boxes), and exceptions may be made for approved educational purposes, health needs, emergencies, translation support, or accommodations outlined in a student's IEP or 504 Plan.
Parents or guardians who need to contact their child during the school day should do so through the school's main office. Additional communication options will be shared with families at the start of each school year.
The full policy will be posted on this page and translated into the most common non-English languages spoken in our community upon request. Annual reporting on enforcement and equity in implementation will begin in 2026.
