The purpose of the grant was to provide local fresh products to people within the community from New York farmers.

The initiative was headed by Julia Solan, Administrative Intern at both Perkins School and the Innovation and Grant Services Department, along with Kim Howell & Braxton Guy, Community Schools Coordinators for the NCSD.

During the months of July and August, Newark CSD, partnering with Headwater Foods’ Farm to School Program in Ontario, held six food distributions from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays outside of Perkins School. Community Schools STEADY work program students helped pass out the food boxes alongside Solan, Howell, and Guy.

"Understanding that school meals are a vital resource for many families during the school year, we saw a need to bridge the gap in access to nutritious food during the summer months,” Solan said. “Together with Kim and Braxton, we organized this initiative to ensure our families continued to receive the support they need. We are pleased to have been able to assist our families through these food distributions and are eager to explore future opportunities to continue our support."
