“The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America. This year’s theme nationally was ‘Life Is a Movie, Film Drug Free.’ To make this year's Red Ribbon Week celebration at NHS the best yet, we planned fun activities and celebration days for students and staff,” said NHS Prevention Counselor Debra Mohat.
They included:
• Wear Red Day Oct. 21st
• Say ‘Peace Out’ to Drugs by wearing something tie-dyed Oct. 22nd
• Team Up Against Drugs by wearing favorite sports team tops Oct. 23rd
• Follow Your Dreams and Stay Drug Free by wearing pajamas or comfy clothes Oct. 24th
• Life is a Movie: Film Drug Free by dressing like favorite movie or tv stars or characters Oct. 25th.
“Some students went all-out dressing in costumes and full-themed outfits to celebrate the theme days,” Mohat said. “For our theme day on Friday we also had a photo booth during lunches in the cafeteria.”
Other Red Ribbon Week activities included an activity booth Oct. 21st from Wayne Behavioral Health Network during which students were able to wear simulation glasses to understand the negative effects of substances like alcohol and THC.
“We also had our school’s annual ‘Pride Class Door Decorating Contest’ in which Pride Classes were asked to decorate their door with an appropriate and creative drug-free message,” Mohat said.
This year's Grand Prize winner was Anita Kelly’s Functional Skills Development Program classroom with the "Walking Dead" theme.
The other winners were:
• First Prize: Kimberly Sutter's Pride Class "Don't Get Wrapped Up in Drugs" theme
• Second Prize: Tracey Cruz's Pride Class "Drugs Are a Nightmare" theme
• Third Prize: Lindsay Walters' Pride Class "Hocus Pocus" theme
• Honorable Mentions: Mark Eakins' Pride Class "Hang with Me" theme and Marcia Wynes' Pride Class "Don't Get Hypnotized By Drugs" theme
