A cardboard box that can become all kinds of things in a child’s imagination was the theme of the second-grade musical “Out of the Box” presented by Perkins School second graders March 20th.

Perkins music teacher Brittany Mechler said the inspiration for the second grade musical she developed and choreographed was the children’s’ book called “Not a Box” by Antionette Portis in which a rabbit uses his imagination to change a cardboard box into a race car, a fire truck, an elephant, a mountain, a pirate ship and a space ship.
Mechler combined her theme with eight children’s songs that second graders sang and danced to along with their music teacher: “Out of the Box,” “Hurry, Hurry, Drive the Firetruck,” “Elephants Have Wrinkles,” “Seven Jumps_Car Version,” “When I Was One,” “I Love the Mountains,” “Star Wars Theme,” and “So Long, Farewell.”
All of the second graders began early in January learning the music and dance steps in Mechler’s music classes.
But it was up to them whether they wanted to perform at the evening presentation March 20th.
Mechler, who is in her first year of teaching in Newark, said she was so proud of the students that performed March 20th.
“They were so enthusiastic and not nervous performing in front of their parents and others attending. They rose to the occasion and did great,” she said.
“THANK YOU again to everyone who helped make this such an incredible experience for our kids. I’ve reached out to several former music teacher colleagues who have been a part of my journey to let them know that I finally got to facilitate a concert experience after 5 years of teaching and I can’t stop singing Newark’s praises. I’m so lucky that I found such an amazing district that gives our students opportunities like this. I’m so proud to be here, and I can’t wait for next year to be even better!”
“Brittany Mechler led a group of about 50 2nd graders in an outstanding showcase of singing, choreography and props. The show "Out of the Box" was a huge success and was a fantastic performance opportunity for our kids,” said Ian Mutch, Perkins and Lincoln School Assistant Principal. “The students had a great time and performed exceptionally. Not only that, but our community and parents came together to enthusiastically support them. It was an amazing event.
"Thank you to Lara Larsson and to all the Perkins staff that assisted in making this evening a success!
"Thank you, Brittany, for all your hard work and congratulations on your success! This was no small accomplishment! You've been such a fantastic addition to our Perkins family, and we are lucky to have you. Congratulations again!”
“This year’s 2nd Grade Musical was a smashing success,” said Perkins Principal Pete Czerkas. “Our 2nd graders were able to showcase all their hard work, musical talents, and build their confidence. Miss Mechler, Perkins School Music Teacher has been a fantastic addition to our teaching team. Her love for music and her students was on full display during this production.”
Four Newark High School students volunteered to open the school entrance doors and give programs to those attending. They were: Kylie Gravino, Kloie Sergeant, Ethan Knock and Alyvia Poole.
