Newark students

This holiday season, students from the Pride program joined Mrs. Stephens and their teacher, Mrs. Buck, to visit the residents of DeMay Living Center for a heartwarming afternoon of crafting and connection. ✂️✨

The visit provided students with the opportunity to engage with residents while working on holiday-themed crafts, an activity that highlighted multiple important skills across social, academic, and emotional learning.

Skills in Action:

🤝 Social Awareness

Interacting with residents gave students a chance to understand and appreciate different perspectives and life experiences, fostering a sense of empathy and cultural awareness.

💬 Relationship Skills

Through conversation and collaboration with residents, students developed stronger communication and interpersonal skills, learning the importance of patience and understanding.

✅ Responsible Decision-Making

Crafting alongside residents encouraged students to make thoughtful, ethical choices and to contribute positively to their community.

🧘‍♀️ Self-Management

The crafting activity offered a creative outlet for students, helping them manage emotions and stress while building confidence in their abilities.

📚 English Language Arts (ELA)

Students practiced their verbal communication skills by engaging in meaningful conversations and could later reflect on the experience in writing.

🌍 Social Studies

By connecting with older generations, students gained a deeper appreciation for history and the contributions of the residents, enriching their understanding of community and heritage.

🎨 Art

Creating holiday crafts with residents allowed students to explore their creativity while developing artistic skills.

This collaboration between Newark Pride students and DeMay Living Center residents not only spread holiday cheer but also strengthened bonds across generations, leaving a lasting impact on both groups. 🎁❤️
