Stoneham said: - The artworks were inspired by student's personal interests, feelings, or ideas.

- They were worked on during 3 classes or more- showing dedication and commitment to their ideas.

- Artists had to receive feedback from at least 2-3 other artists on their artwork throughout the stages of its creation.

-They then had to reflect on the conversations about their artwork and refine their artwork for presentation.

-They also were required to write 3-5 sentences about their artwork and creative process.

-Students helped with the presentation by selecting paper frame colors for their artworks and making backgrounds or stands for some 3-dimensional artworks. “Parents were in awe of the volume of art throughout the hallways,” Stoneham said after the event. “One parent shared, ‘WOW, this really must be art from every student here! There is so much to see!’ Parents lit up watching their kids talk about their art and seeing how excited and proud they were to have their pieces on display.

“It brought me so much joy to see the smiles on students’ faces as they rushed their parents over to their artwork to say: ‘Look at what I made!’ It was clear to me how proud students felt and it was great to see them so excited to share with their families.

“Leading up to the art show, students arrived at class excited to get to right to art making. Many students chose to be in the art room at recess time, coming in to spend time with their WOW pieces. It's been warming to see students so motivated by the creative process.”

For the third year in a row, the 6:30 p.m. art show was purposely held the same night as the 7 p.m. 4th and 5th grade Band, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Choruses and Bucket Brigade Concert at the school. After the evening art show, the art stays up for a week at Kelley School.

“During that time students take an in-house “field trip" down to the art show "gallery" during their art class. They take time to admire the art and write compliments to other Kelley artists about their artwork. Then they are delivered by me to the students. This whole exercise helps students learn about art appreciation.”
