Sixty three staff and students at Newark High School received a surprise Valentine’s Day singing telegram on February 14th.
That’s when 14 outstanding NHS musicians aka “Choir Council” showed up in their classrooms or other areas in the school and beautifully sang, “In The Still Of The Night.”
Singers included: Brooklyn Baker, Bella Humphrey, Felicity Brey, Mikalya Miller, Braydan Sherman, Noah Garland, Andrew Flock, Ian Murphy, Matteo Botelho, Ryan Hinks, Jocelyn Hinks, Addison Burgess, Courtney Jadus and Bailey Harris.
“This year there were 63 telegrams ordered for a $5 donation. We were a little nervous about fitting all the singing telegrams into one day. This is the most we have ever had it was a great turnout. We will be donating the money to a local charity that “Choir Council” will decide on,” said NHS Vocal Music teacher Kate Flock.
Last year $300 was raised by the NHS vocal musicians and given to Laurel House Comfort Care Home. In 2019, another group of NHS singers raised and donated $220 to the same charity.
Three members of “Choir Council” thought bringing surprise singing telegrams was a lot of fun.
“I can’t think of any other way I would’ve wanted to spend my Valentine’s Day than spreading love around school with some of my favorite people.” - Felicity Brey
"Yesterday went well, we got through all of the people, and everyone liked it!" - Andrew Flock
“We were able to help bring some fun into the day by going to classes and singing, some people even danced for us as we sang. Many of the recipients of the singing telegrams said it brought a lot of joy to their day.” - Jocelyn Hinks.
NHS Counseling Secretary Jo Gromoske, who is also Junior Class Adviser, loved hearing the NHS singers deliver a telegram to the main office staff at the High School where she is temporarily filling in.
"Kate Flock and her students truly brought the Valentine spirit with their telegram., I will be looking forward to next year (and buying telegrams) just to hear their beautiful harmonious voices!"
